Accessing Settings

How to Open Settings

  1. Open Timelined and navigate to the main timeline view
  2. Tap the settings icon (gear icon) in the navigation bar
  3. The settings view opens with all available options

Settings Sections

Settings are organized into sections:

  • Appearance: Theme and visual preferences
  • Timeline Elements: What to display in the timeline
  • Date Range: Default date filtering
  • Manage Data: Categories, types, tags, people, filters
  • Premium: Subscription and purchase information
  • Data: Export and backup options

Appearance Settings

Theme

Choose your preferred color scheme for the app.

Options

  • Light: Light mode with light backgrounds
  • Dark: Dark mode with dark backgrounds
  • Automatic: Follows your device’s system setting

How to Change

  1. Open Settings
  2. Find “Theme” in the Appearance section
  3. Select your preferred option using the segmented control
  4. Changes apply immediately

Tips:

  • Use “Automatic” to match your device’s appearance
  • Dark mode is easier on the eyes in low light
  • Light mode provides better contrast in bright environments

Timeline Display Settings

Show Subtitle

  • Toggle: Show or hide event subtitles in the timeline
  • Default: On
  • Use When: You want to see additional context for events

Show Description

  • Toggle: Show or hide event descriptions in the timeline
  • Default: On
  • Use When: You want to see full event details

Description Line Limit

When “Show Description” is enabled, you can limit how many lines are shown:

  • 1 line: Compact view, shows first line only
  • 2 lines: Balanced view, shows first two lines
  • 3 lines: Expanded view, shows first three lines

Tips:

  • Use fewer lines for a cleaner, more compact timeline
  • Use more lines to see more event details at a glance

Show Tags

  • Toggle: Show or hide event tags in the timeline
  • Default: On
  • Use When: You want to see tag labels on events

Show People

  • Toggle: Show or hide associated people in the timeline
  • Default: On
  • Use When: You want to see who is associated with events

Show Time

  • Toggle: Show or hide time for events with full date precision
  • Default: On
  • Use When: You want to see specific times for events

Note: Only applies to events with full date precision (date and time).

Hide Duplicate Dates

  • Toggle: Hide date headers when multiple events share the same date
  • Default: Off
  • Use When: You want a more compact timeline view

Tips:

  • Enable to reduce visual clutter
  • Disable to see date headers for all events

Show Child Events

  • Toggle: Show or hide child events in the timeline
  • Default: On
  • Use When: You want to see nested events

Parent Event Date Preference

When “Show Child Events” is enabled, you can choose how parent event dates are displayed:

  • Use Parent Date: Show parent event’s date
  • Use Earliest Child: Show earliest child event’s date
  • Use Latest Child: Show latest child event’s date

Tips:

  • Use parent date for consistency
  • Use earliest/latest child for date range visualization

Date Range Settings

Show Events From

Set the default date range for viewing events in the timeline.

Options

  • All Time: Show all events regardless of date
  • Last Year: Show events from the past year
  • Last 5 Years: Show events from the past 5 years
  • Last 10 Years: Show events from the past 10 years
  • This Century: Show events from the current century
  • Custom Range: Set a custom date range

How to Change

  1. Open Settings
  2. Find “Show events from” in the Date Range section
  3. Select your preferred range
  4. Changes apply to the timeline view

Tips:

  • Use “All Time” for complete historical views
  • Use specific ranges to focus on recent or historical periods
  • Combine with filters for more precise date filtering

Data Management

Managing Categories

Categories provide high-level organization for events.

Accessing Category Management

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap “Manage Categories”
  3. View all categories in the list

Creating a Category

  1. In Category Management, tap the “+” button
  2. Enter category name
  3. Choose a color for the category
  4. Tap “Save”

Editing a Category

  1. Tap on a category in the list
  2. Modify name or color
  3. Tap “Save”

Deleting a Category

  1. Swipe left on a category
  2. Tap “Delete”
  3. Confirm deletion

Note: Deleting a category does not delete events, but events will lose their category assignment.

Tips:

  • Use colors to visually distinguish categories
  • Create categories that make sense for your use case
  • Common categories: Work, Personal, Travel, Health, Education

Managing Event Types

Event types provide specific classification for events.

Accessing Type Management

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap “Manage Event Types”
  3. View all types in the list

Creating a Type

  1. In Type Management, tap the “+” button
  2. Enter type name
  3. Choose a symbol (optional)
  4. Tap “Save”

Editing a Type

  1. Tap on a type in the list
  2. Modify name or symbol
  3. Tap “Save”

Deleting a Type

  1. Swipe left on a type
  2. Tap “Delete”
  3. Confirm deletion

Tips:

  • Use types to further classify events within categories
  • Common types: Meeting, Milestone, Vacation, Appointment, Project
  • Symbols help with visual identification

Managing Tags

Tags provide flexible labeling for events.

Accessing Tag Management

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap “Manage Tags”
  3. View all tags in the list

Creating a Tag

  1. In Tag Management, tap the “+” button
  2. Enter tag name
  3. Tap “Save”

Editing a Tag

  1. Tap on a tag in the list
  2. Modify name
  3. Tap “Save”

Deleting a Tag

  1. Swipe left on a tag
  2. Tap “Delete”
  3. Confirm deletion

Tips:

  • Tags are great for cross-cutting concerns
  • Use multiple tags per event for flexible organization
  • Common tags: important, urgent, completed, personal, work-related

Managing People

People records track individuals associated with events.

Accessing People Management

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap “Manage People”
  3. View all people in the list

Creating a Person

  1. In People Management, tap the “+” button
  2. Enter person name
  3. Add photo (optional)
  4. Choose a color (optional)
  5. Tap “Save”

Editing a Person

  1. Tap on a person in the list
  2. Modify name, photo, or color
  3. Tap “Save”

Deleting a Person

  1. Swipe left on a person
  2. Tap “Delete”
  3. Confirm deletion

Tips:

  • Add photos to make people easily recognizable
  • Use colors to visually distinguish people
  • Useful for tracking events involving specific individuals

Managing Filters

Saved filters allow you to quickly apply filter combinations.

Accessing Filter Management

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap “Manage Filters”
  3. View all saved filters in the list

Viewing Filter Details

  1. Tap on a filter to view its criteria
  2. See all filter settings configured for that filter

Deleting a Filter

  1. Swipe left on a filter
  2. Tap “Delete”
  3. Confirm deletion

Premium Settings

Premium Status

View your current premium subscription status.

Information Displayed

  • Premium Unlocked: Shows if you have active premium
  • Subscription Type:
    • Lifetime Access
    • Monthly Subscription
    • Annual Subscription
  • Subscription Details: Expiration date (for subscriptions)

Restore Purchases

If you’ve purchased premium on another device or after reinstalling:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap “Restore Purchases”
  3. Wait for verification
  4. Premium status updates if purchases are found

Tips:

  • Use this if premium isn’t showing after purchase
  • Useful when setting up on a new device
  • May take a few moments to verify

Premium Features

Premium unlocks:

  • Unlimited Events: Create as many events as you need
  • All Features: Full access to all app features
  • No Restrictions: No event limits or feature restrictions

Data Export and Backup

Exporting Data

Export your events and data for backup or sharing.

Export Options

  1. Open Settings
  2. Scroll to “Data” section
  3. Tap “Export Data”
  4. Choose export format
  5. Save or share the exported file

Export Formats

  • CSV: Spreadsheet-compatible format

Tips:

  • Export regularly for backup
  • Use exports to migrate data between devices
  • Share exports for collaboration
  • Inidividual events can be exported to PDF or Markdown format

Data Management

Delete All Events

⚠️ Warning: This permanently deletes all events and cannot be undone.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Scroll to “Data” section
  3. Tap “Delete All Events”
  4. Confirm deletion in the alert

Important:

  • This action cannot be undone
  • Export your data before deleting
  • Consider using filters instead of deleting

Tips and Best Practices

Appearance Customization

  1. Match Your Environment: Use light mode in bright environments, dark mode in low light
  2. Automatic Theme: Let the app match your device settings
  3. Experiment: Try different combinations to find what works best

Timeline Display

  1. Balance Detail and Clutter: Show enough information without overwhelming the view
  2. Use Line Limits: Limit description lines for a cleaner timeline
  3. Toggle Elements: Show/hide elements based on your current needs
  4. Child Events: Show child events when working with complex projects

Data Organization

  1. Consistent Naming: Use consistent naming for categories, types, and tags
  2. Color Coding: Use colors to visually distinguish categories and people
  3. Regular Cleanup: Periodically review and clean up unused items
  4. Hierarchical Organization: Use categories and types together for better organization

Date Range Management

  1. Start Broad: Use “All Time” to see everything
  2. Narrow Down: Use specific ranges for focused views
  3. Combine with Filters: Use date range settings with filters for precise views

Premium Management

  1. Check Status: Regularly verify premium status
  2. Restore When Needed: Use restore purchases if premium isn’t showing
  3. Understand Limits: Free tier has 10 event limit, premium is unlimited

Backup and Export

  1. Regular Backups: Export data regularly for safety
  2. Multiple Formats: Use different formats for different purposes
  3. Before Major Changes: Export before deleting or making major changes
  4. Migration: Use exports to move data between devices

Troubleshooting

Settings Not Saving

  • Check App State: Ensure app is not in background
  • Restart App: Close and reopen the app
  • Check Permissions: Ensure app has necessary permissions

Premium Not Showing

  • Restore Purchases: Try restoring purchases
  • Check Internet: Ensure internet connection is active
  • Wait a Moment: Subscription verification may take time
  • Contact Support: If issues persist, contact support

Data Not Exporting

  • Check Storage: Ensure you have enough storage space
  • Check Permissions: Ensure app has file access permissions
  • Try Again: Export may take time for large datasets

Categories/Types/Tags Not Appearing

  • Refresh View: Close and reopen the management view
  • Check Creation: Verify items were created successfully
  • Restart App: Close and reopen the app
